Preparing Jasmine Rice: Fluffy, Fragrant, and Foolproof

Stovetop Method (Absorption)

Serves 3–4 Ingredients:

  • 1 cup jasmine rice
  • 1¼ cups cold water (key ratio for jasmine — less than standard white rice to avoid gumminess)
  • Pinch of salt (optional)
  • 1 tbsp butter or oil (optional, for flavor and separation)

Steps:

  1. Optional rinse: Place rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold water until the water runs mostly clear (1–2 minutes). This removes excess starch for fluffier grains. Many everyday methods skip this with good results.
  2. Combine rice, water, salt, and butter (if using) in a medium saucepan with a tight-fitting lid.
  3. Bring to a rapid simmer over medium-high heat, uncovered.
  4. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer gently for 12 minutes. Do not lift the lid.
  5. Remove from heat and let stand, covered, for 10 minutes.
  6. Fluff with a fork or rice paddle and serve.

Rice cooker: Use 1:1 to 1:1.25 rice-to-water ratio (follow your machine’s guidelines or the 1:1.25 for softer results). Add salt/butter if desired and use the white rice setting.

Instant Pot / Pressure Cooker: 1 cup rice to 1 cup water, high pressure 4–5 minutes, natural release 10 minutes.

Tips for Perfect Jasmine Rice Every Time

  • Water ratio is critical — Jasmine is softer than basmati, so 1¼ cups water per cup of rice prevents sogginess.
  • Scale easily: Double or triple ingredients proportionally.
  • Flavor boosts: Add a bay leaf, smashed garlic, or coconut milk (replace some water) for variations.
  • Storage: Leftovers keep in the fridge up to 4 days or freeze for 3 months. Reheat with a splash of water.
  • For fried rice: Cook a day ahead and chill — day-old rice fries better.
  • Brown jasmine rice needs more water (about 1¾–2 cups per cup rice) and longer cook time (40–45 min).
